Privacy Policy

Effective 17 August 2026 · Version 2.1 · Controller: Ville Perttilahti, Finland

For kids 👋

Will·e helps you practice for tests. We only know your nickname, your grade, your avatar and your practice results — we don’t know your real name or where you live, and we never show ads. Your practice results are saved to your account so they aren’t lost if your phone changes or goes missing. We don’t keep the questions themselves, only how many there were and how you did. Your parent’s email helps keep your account safe. The questions are made by an AI, and AI can make mistakes — always check important things with your teacher or a parent. If anything feels wrong in the app, tell them right away.

Who we are

Will·e is a learning app for comprehensive-school pupils, made by independent developer Ville Perttilahti in Finland. Because our users are children, this policy is written to meet the EU/UK GDPR, the ICO Children’s Code, the US COPPA Rule, the UK Online Safety Act and Canada’s PIPEDA.

What we collect and why

Data Why
Nickname, display name, school grade, avatar choice To create the account and match question difficulty to the grade. We ask children to use a nickname, not their real name.
Parent’s email address To verify parental consent, recover the account, and (if enabled) send weekly learning summaries.
Practice results: when a practice round was played, how many questions it had, how many were answered correctly, and the subject To show progress in the history view and in the parent’s summaries. Individual questions and answers are not stored — only these five details per round.
Tests you add to the calendar: date, subject, topic, reminder time and, if you choose, the grade you received The test calendar and its reminders.
Streaks, coins, avatars and space-journey progress The learning game itself.
Friend connections, challenges and emoji reactions Optional social features. Friends are added by exact nickname and must be accepted. There is no messaging, no public profiles and no content feed. When you send a friend a challenge, the questions in that challenge are stored with it so your friend can play the same ones.
Photos or files you upload; chatbot messages Sent securely to our AI provider to generate practice questions and answers. We do not store this content on our servers.
Push notification tokens Only to deliver notifications you enable (challenges, friend requests, test reminders, screen-time countdown).
Subscription status To provide the paid features you purchased. Payments are handled entirely by Apple; we never see payment card details.

Account, practice and test data are stored on the user’s account rather than on the device alone, so that they can be restored to a new phone using the nickname and a recovery code sent to the parent’s email. Without this, changing or losing a device — or deleting the app — would permanently erase the child’s progress.

We do not collect: real names, addresses, phone numbers, location, contact lists, biometric data, advertising identifiers or browsing history. We show no ads, use no third-party analytics, and never sell or rent personal data.

Artificial intelligence

Practice questions and chatbot answers are generated by an AI model (Google Gemini; Anthropic Claude as a fallback) from the content your child uploads. AI-generated content can contain errors; it is a study aid, not a substitute for teachers or other reliable sources. We use the paid tier of these services, whose terms provide that content is not used to train general AI models. Content is retained for up to 55 days for abuse detection, and if a safety filter flags it, authorised staff at the provider may review it. Will·e does not store uploaded photos, files or chat messages.

Parental consent and parents’ rights

When a child creates an account, we send a confirmation email to the parent’s address. Social features and the AI chat activate only after the parent confirms. Unconfirmed accounts and their data are deleted automatically. Parents may at any time review their child’s data, correct it, delete the account, restrict or object to processing, request the data in a machine-readable form for transfer to another provider, withdraw consent or refuse further collection by emailing tuki@will-e.app. Deleting the account removes the child’s data from our systems. Under EU/UK law you may also lodge a complaint with your data protection authority (in Finland: Tietosuojavaltuutetun toimisto).

Who we share data with

Only with service providers that are necessary to run Will·e, under contracts limiting them to our instructions: Supabase (database and authentication; hosted in the United Kingdom, covered by the EU adequacy decision), Google (AI processing; USA), Anthropic (AI processing, fallback; USA), Apple (notifications, payments, optional Sign in with Apple), RevenueCat (subscription management; receives only a pseudonymous ID; USA) and Resend (transactional email to the parent; USA). Transfers to US providers rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and/or Standard Contractual Clauses. We disclose data beyond this only if required by law.

How long we keep data

Data Retention
Account, practice and test data Until the account is deleted; accounts inactive for 24 months are deleted automatically
Parent’s email Same as the account
Challenges and the questions in them Until the account is deleted
Account recovery codes Single use; expire in 15 minutes
Push tokens Replaced automatically; countdown records removed after delivery
Uploaded photos and chat messages Not stored by Will·e; the AI provider retains them for up to 55 days for abuse detection

Security

All traffic is encrypted (TLS). Server data is protected by row-level access control so each account can only reach its own data; administrative access is limited to the developer. Recovery codes are single-use and short-lived. We review our security practices at least annually.

Reporting a problem

To report inappropriate content, another user, or any safety concern, email tuki@will-e.app. Reports are reviewed promptly and accounts violating our terms can be removed.

Changes

We will update this policy when our practices change and will notify parents by email of material changes. Previous versions are available on request.

Version 2.1: clarified which practice and test data are stored on the user’s account and why, and added that the questions in a challenge are stored with it. Expanded the list of parents’ rights.
